Scrappy Snack Chat: Flavorful Ways to Fight Food Waste

June 11 @ 6:15 pm 8:00 pm

This event will take place IN PERSON at Zingerman’s Greyline!

In celebration of the City of Ann Arbor’s 4th Annual A2ZERO Week and in collaboration with ZeroWaste.Org and their food waste challenge, we are pleased to invite you to join us at Zingerman’s Greyline for a Scrappy Snack Chat. Together with our Deli Events team, ZeroWaste.Org, and local author Lindsay-Jean Hard, author of Cooking with Scraps, you’ll find out how to make the most of your groceries while making a positive impact on the planet.

Fans of Zingerman’s know our organization has a triple bottom line (Great Food, Great Finance, and Great Service). Lindsay-Jean likes to say that fighting food waste has a triple bottom line too—cooking with scraps is good for your palate, the planet, and your pocketbook! It is estimated that over 92 billion pounds of food are wasted every year in the United States, with the average household wasting around 35% of their food. That means every single one of us can be part of the solution! Learn strategies for storing food properly to maximize its shelf life, tasty tips and tricks for using commonly underutilized produce parts and other edible odds and ends, and why it’s so important to keep food waste out of landfills anyway.

In addition to the conversation, we’ll have a buffet featuring snacks and a mocktail made with kitchen scraps! (Joining the movement to stop wasting food has never tasted so good!) Cash bar available for beer, wine, and cocktails.

Our event panelists:

Lindsay-Jean Hard – Writer, Author, and Content Creator at Zingerman’s

Lindsay-Jean’s lifelong passion for sustainability has turned into a focus on reducing food waste (thanks to her influence Zingerman’s Bakehouse now uses whole bananas—peels and all!—in their banana bread). She is the IACP award-nominated author of Cooking with Scraps, co-author of Zingerman’s Bakehouse Celebrate Every Day, and contributing author to IKEA Canada’s The Scraps Book: A Waste-Less Cookbook. A former Food52 editor, Lindsay-Jean has appeared on The Food Network and been featured in the New York TimesWashington Post, TASTE, The Splendid Table, and more.

Lydia McMullen-Laird – Deputy Director at ZeroWaste.Org

Lydia is an advocate for environmental sustainability and waste reduction, currently serving as the Deputy Director of ZeroWaste.org. Her zero-waste journey began when she and her brother Samuel decided to adopt a zero-waste lifestyle in 2015. They cofounded ZeroWaste.org to create systemic change around zero waste.  Lydia has 10+ years of experience in the environmental field, including a Fulbright Research Fellowship, working in environmental law at the Natural Resources Defense Council in Beijing China, and as an audio producer and reporter covering climate and environmental news.

Tessie Ives-Wilson – Event Coordinator at Zingerman’s Delicatessen

Tessie has been with Zingerman’s since 2006. She’s worked throughout the Community of Businesses, from Mail Order to the Delicatessen to the Creamery, where she received the American Cheese Society’s prestigious Certified Cheese Professionals® certification. Now back at the Deli, Tessie heads up tasting and events, where she delights in making the foods the Deli carries more accessible for guests. (In fact, she earned the nickname “Enabler-in-Chief” for her ability to help guests envision themselves using select ingredients or cooking techniques in their own kitchens.)
